biological safety cabinet(BSC)

A safety cabinet is a box-structured device used by operators when handling infectious biological materials. It is also called a biohazard countermeasure cabinet or a biosafety cabinet, and depending on the biosafety level (BSL) of biological materials, either an open type or closed type structure is used. While clean benches and bio-clean benches are intended only to prevent foreign substances such as microorganisms from the outside, safety cabinets are also intended to keep the operators from getting infected (containment) in addition to preventing foreign substances from entering and microorganisms from leaking out into the air. Inside the safety cabinet, sterile air that has passed through a HEPA filter is supplied in one direction to create an airflow and keep the inside of the cabinet clean. In the case of an open system, an airflow (air barrier) is generated in the opening for operators to access the inside of the safety cabinet, which acts as a barrier between the inside and outside. On the other hand, closed type safety cabinets are required to have a certain level of closed structure instead of having an air barrier.
Please refer to NSF/ANSI 49-2007 (US NS Standard)、EN12469(EN Standard)、JIS K 3800:2009(JIS for standards regarding structures and performances.
