hematopoietic stem cell

Hematopoietic stem cells are self-renewing somatic stem cells (tissue stem cells) that can differentiate into blood cells.
In humans, hematopoietic stem cells are present in the bone marrow and repeatedly undergo cell divisions to differentiate into red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, macrophages, and so forth. CD34, a cell surface glycoprotein, is commonly used as a marker for human hematopoietic stem cells, but its number is extremely low and needs to be detected carefully.
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is used for blood diseases that are difficult to cure by chemotherapy or radiation therapy alone.
