automated cell culture

Automated cell culture refers to cell culture where all or part of the cell culture procedure is replaced by machine(s). Combined with image analysis software, the quality of cells cultured in automated cell culture system will be more robust and stable.
When the same process parameters do not result in the same product quality due to the lot-to-lot variability in cell characteristics, the capability to evaluate cell state quickly and accurately, and update process parameters within the predefined allowance, is required.
Also, in the production of regenerative medical products, creative ways to minimize cell loss need to be devised as the number of available cells is often limited. Adoption of a non-invasive in-process inspection method for optimizing the design of materials according to the mechanical characteristics of the cells is considered effective.
Therefore, automatic culture requires hardware that enables stable and precise operation, and software that evaluates the process state and performs feedback management. These criteria need to be quantified when designing an automated cell culture system.
