undifferentiation

The term "undifferentiation" is used here to refer to the level at which the undifferentiated cell state is maintained. Cells with the ability to self-renewal, but also to become other types of cells, are known as stem cells. Stem cells are broadly classified into various types according to their differentiation potential, origin, and so forth. Pluripotent stem cells are cells with the ability to differentiate into almost all cells in the body, and include embryonic stem cells (ESCs), as well as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). In addition to pluripotent stem cells, there are a number of multipotent stem cell types in the body, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and many tissue stem cell types that are specific for certain tissues.
When stem cells are maintained in an undifferentiated state, they are said to be "undifferentiated".
