Taking this opportunity, we wish to thank you for your continued patronage of Nikon products.

Our in-house inspection has reported that certain parts of the main bodies and accessories of our biological, stereo, measuring and industrial microscopes contain lead and hexavalent chromium which exceed the standard value specified in the RoHS Directive*

We regret any inconvenience this matter may cause and report the facts as follows.

  • *RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU) was originated in the European Union to restrict the use of certain hazardous materials such as lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), found in electrical and electronic products.

Affected products

Biological microscopes ECLIPSE Ci series, E100/E200 series and some of their parts in the accessories
Stereo microscope SMZ800N and SMZ1270 series
Measuring microscope MM-200: some parts in the main body, observation unit, stage and accessories
Industrial microscope ECLIPSE LV100N POL

Reason

We have identified that some of the products mentioned above include parts and materials which do not meet the RoHS Directive. Our guidance and control to our supplier for implementing RoHS Directive was not sufficiently thorough.

Countermeasures

Though we have stopped shipping these products as soon as the issues were identified, we will start to ship again once our countermeasures are in place.
These issues do not affect the quality, function or performance of the products and human health in normal use. These products can still continue to be used under normal usage.
Although the products can still be used, we will offer a replacement upon request.

Preventive actions

As part of our preventive actions to address this situation, Quality committee and Environmental committee, our internal organizations, have conducted reaffirmation of RoHS Directive compliance among all business units.
In addition, we will take steps to reeducate our personnel to more thoroughly implement the RoHS Directive within the Nikon group. This is to reinforce the inspection process and to be more thorough in guiding and controlling our suppliers to strictly implement the RoHS Directive. These actions will be taken to prevent repetition of this incident.
